To New Beginnings
Last night may be a blur, and what fragments you remember, you may not be proud of. You may have woken up later and a little more hung over than anticipated today. But that’s okay, because it’s January 1st.
Happy New Year.
Something about the New Year ignites a newfound determination for us to reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly of the ghost of years past.
With that said, PremierLife has compiled a laundry list that is too 2012 to survive into 2013.
1. The Technology
Have you lost your ability to be personable without your phone? Does the world come to an end when your battery dies?
I dare you to put away your phone for one whole night while you are out with your friends. Maybe you’ll actually enjoy the company of people who are in front of you. Shocking, I know. Besides, you look like an awkward snob when you’re instagramming instead of mingling.
It’s time to let go of the Technology.
2. The Gossip
Have you ever thought that if people are talking poorly about you, that you might actually deserve it?
Filter that gossip. Is there truth to what is being said, or is it a fabrication?
Admitting to your weaknesses can be the toughest thing in the world. Though the gossiper may not be your friend, they are doing you a favour by letting you know what it is that you need to do to better yourself as a person.
On the flipside, if there is absolutely zero truth to the gossip, why are you still caring? Your self-worth cannot be determined by ignorant babbles. Let the haters hate.
It’s time to let go of The Gossip.
3. The Habit
If you bite your nails, your hands are ugly. If you smoke, your lungs and your cough are ugly. If you spend too much money, your bank account balance is ugly.
No one likes ugly.
It’s time to let go of The Habit.
4. The Sloth
Post-Bar Binge, gain 5 pounds. There’s a reason you pant when you walk up UC Hill. It’s because you are a sloth. Start or continue your workout ritual not only for Cancun, but because you can. You can’t pine for your dream body if you spend your day dreaming about it.
Assignment Late, deduct 10%. Remind me why you are enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution. Sometimes I forget when you can’t show up to class or complete your homework in time because you were “too busy”. Too busy doing what? Too busy having fun. Let 2013 be a year for perfect attendance and for school to re-become a priority.
Think about the consequences before you dive into the deep end. Don’t put yourself in situations where you will wind up feeling guilty. If you do, you have no one to blame but yourself. Sink or swim.
It’s time to let go of The Sloth.
5. The Grudge
As LC famously once said,
The only thing left to do is forgive and forget. I want to forgive you and I want to forget you.
It’s time to forgive, and if you can’t, it’s time to forget. Whether it is a friend, family member, classmate, roommate, or the ex, there is no better time to re-evaluate where you want them to stand in your life.
The people you keep closest to you should bring out the best in you, rather than the demons. Anger and stress are toxic and will only be detrimental to your new beginning.
It’s time to let go of The Grudge.
With a new year comes new realizations, and with those realizations, should come new resolutions. Whether it is your first or fifth year, it’s time to think about how you would like to spend the upcoming year. Wishing you the best for 2013.
To New Endings, and To New Beginnings.
