For the Ladies: Valentine’s Day

evemarshall Posted on February 9, 2012

Ah Valentine’s Day. The day women painfully dread or absolutely love. The awkward occasion when couples seem annoying to everyone not in a relationship and where single girls want to crawl into a dark hole. The day men run out to the store last minute and throw together a cliché gift of chocolate and roses. Or the day where the few odd impressive males actually planned an evening out with their lady in advance. Ladies, whether you’re buying a gift for you man or just waiting for the day to end – here is your fool proof guide to surviving Valentine’s Day.

Are you Single?

Does being single on Valentine’s Day often feel like this?

First things first, you want to avoid the following things on Valentine’s Day:

  1. Being alone – This just calls for a disaster.
  2. Going to a restaurant where your friend and her boyfriend are also dining.
  3. Getting so drunk you “accidentally” call or text an ex.
  4. Eat so much chocolate you hate yourself in the morning.

Following these 4 simple rules will hopefully avoid something like this from happening:

Now that we’ve covered all the potential casualties that could occur, here are a couple ideas of what you can do on this joyous occasion:

  • Go to dinner with your girlfriends. Get a little drunk and laugh at all the reasons you don’t want to be in a relationship and hate love men.
  • Throw an I hate Valentine’s Day party like in the movie Valentine’s Day. Just be sure that whoever you invite actually shows up otherwise you’ll probably end up breaking all 4 rules.
  • If you have a compulsive shopping problem like me, buy a cute gift for one of your girls like a teddy bear.
  • Treat yourself to a spa day – Do your nails, a face mask and take a long bath with some candles.
  • Go out for a movie. Many movies premiere this day and it would be a fun thing to do with friends. Make sure you see The Vow with Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum and be sure to pack some tissues cause this is a guaranteed tear-jerker. Check out the preview below:

Are you Tied-Down?

Does buying a gift on Valentine’s Day often seem like this?

Assuming you and your man want to dote upon each other with gifts here are a few less cliché ideas:

  • Food. Men love food and they can never have too much of it. Get him some chocolate or even a subway gift card, if it can fill his stomach, you know he’ll love it.
  • Valentine’s day is about being sexy. Dressing up for him or even giving him a sultry photo would probably make his evening.
  • If you’re interested in buying him something a bit more pricy, I would stick to a cologne. He will appreciate that you picked out something nice you’d like to smell on him.

Okay couples now here are a few date ideas assuming that your date doesn’t hate you if your gift fell through or you somehow forgot the card:

  • A dinner date out. This requires reservations and be sure to make them well in advance. Make sure you and your boy figure out who’s actually making them or you’ll end up eating pepperoni pizza together on the floor of Little Caesars.
  • Make a meal at home. Decide who’s the chef or if you’ll cook together. Go out and buy a nice bottle of wine and fire up the candles and music. You’ll probably be hosting the dinner, because we all know how most men keep their houses.
  • Order in. For those of you that don’t like a huge display of affection, order in some food and play a classic romance movie. Girls you may even get lucky and be allowed to watch Dear John or even The Notebook.
