Lessons Learned from Summer Songs

Lessons Learned from Summer Songs

As per usual, this past summer featured a number of what I like to call “Summer Songs.” You know, the ones constantly being played on every top 40 station across the GTA. In my struggle to get back into the swing of things I’ve retreated back to my summer playlists and locked myself in my room with the temperature turned up while wearing a sundress…Okay I’m lying, but you get my point.

So I’ve taken these summer jams and realized that thanks to these songs I have learned some very valuable lessons, which I am passing onto you. I know, I’m a sweetheart.

“Last Friday Night (TGIF)” by Katy Perry

Katy Perry obviously visited UWO on a Wednesday but realized no one would believe this song if she called it Last Wednesday Night, so she had to change the day. But, this song taught me that Western is special. Everything Miss. Perry sings about in this song isn’t that outrageous to me. I see girls dance on table tops and people doing too many shots all the time, so what’s the big deal? The big deal is that for some this would be a crazy night. We have to appreciate Western for having the atmosphere it does. Thank you Katy, for teaching me to appreciate Richmond Row even more.

“Danza Kuduro” by Don Omar

This song taught me how to wine. Well, helped me perfect it.

“The Lazy Song” by Bruno Mars

This song really pissed me off because it would play all day at work when all I wanted to do was everything in this song and all I was allowed to do was sit at my computer and try and remain patient when another client came in with another problem. Bruno brings up a good point though, sometimes you just have to make yourself happy. For some reason though, I don’t think Bruno Mars would ever have to put his own hands in his pants.

“Where Dem Girls At”- David Guetto ft. Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida

Oh David! How do you do it? Hit after hit after hit. I’m actually amazed. This song single-handedly got me through spring exams and then whenever I needed to get pumped up to go out, this was always my go-to song. But what did it teach me? Sometimes, a great beat and and some catchy lyrics is all that is needed.

“Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj

Nicki kills it. Even if people say they don’t like this song, look around the bar when this song comes on and by the end of it everyone is bobbing their heads to the beats. Nicki taught me that you have to know what you want in a partner. In this song she knows what she wants and isn’t settling for anything less. I dig that. Plus she’s swaggy as hell.

“Levels” by Avicii

Sometimes you’ll get a good feeling. Then, wait for the beat to drop.

So while the weather turns a little cooler and I replace my cork wedges with leather boots when I go to the bar, the summer of 2011 stays with me. But not only because my tan is holding up rather nicely, but also because the songs of the summer have taught me some valuable life lessons.
