Alphabet Soup: The Grimiest of RL Grime

brittanyluongo Posted on November 27, 2012

Back when I decided to cover trap music for the letter “T”, I was most influenced by the sounds coming from RL Grime. Since then, I’ve been anticipating this letter of the alphabet. This week’s Alphabet Soup of the day will be a nice big bowl of RL Grime a.k.a. Henry Steinway a.k.a. Clockwork. Henry Steinway has adopted a couple of personas in the DJ realm, but the focus of today’s Alphabet Soup will be solely on his Grime character. RL Grime sounds familiar doesn’t it? A name associated with terrifying you as a child perhaps? That’s because, he drew inspiration for his stage name from the classic kids’ horror writer R.L. Stine (you know, the one who used to give you Goosebumps..) R.L. was apparently so flattered by this decision that he took it upon himself to make an appearance on Grime’s recent (AMAZING) Halloween Mix (which you can check out here)

As trap music is becoming increasingly popular, RL Grime isn’t going unnoticed. Over the past month, he’s proved himself worthy of making it to the third spot on the Billboard’s “Next Big Sound”.  His music is even getting noticed across the world, as his remix of Kanye’s “Mercy” conveniently made its way onto the radio waves in Italy over the summer. His remix of “Mercy” far surpasses the original and his take on the classic “Hey Ma” by Cam’ron cannot be any more perfect…or maybe I’m just biased. Either way, he’s straight killing the trap music scene.

This magic man takes hip-hop, rap songs, and RNB and turns them into something magical. Whether he slows them down or messes with the vocals, the end result is always on point. I dare you to listen to a few of his songs and not be holding back any attempt at losing your shit. You don’t believe the hype? Well if you don’t take it from Snoop Dogg himself, then I have nothing left to say to you. If my music was getting recognition from Snoop D-oh-double-G, I’d be able to die happy. RL is making it big, one tune at a time.

To make things even more wonderful, RL is releasing his remix of the ever so popular (and ever so remixed) “Satisfaction” on December 17th, so if you’re interested, be sure to check that out. Below I will include some of his best songs, and once you’ve listened to those, I can guarantee that you will be obsessed.

Enjoy.
