The talent that is being pumped from our native land should be showcased on a regular basis because if you ask me, we have some serious acts coming from across the nation. For this week’s Alphabet Soup, I’d like to do exactly that. Kicking off the letter “P” is Purity Ring. Purity Ring is an electronic music duo based out of Montreal. Megan James lends her voice to the almost spiritual vocals, as Corin Roddick, interestingly enough, plays a custom-built, tree-shaped instrument during their live shows and has a major role in the production aspect.
This band’s emergence was back in early 2011, when their song “Ungirthed” started circulating the “interweb”. As bands such as Starslinger and Burial became increasingly popular, the type of sounds that “Ungirthed” had to offer started getting some serious attention. As a result, Purity Ring was introduced to an increasing fan base.
Monday afternoon marked the much anticipated arrival of their official music video for one of their tracks (which also happens to be my favourite), “Lofticries”. The track is airy, peaceful, and has you in another world as you take in all of its elements. The director of the music video AG Rojas recently explained, “Lofticries’ is a music video exploring the stoicism of psychically connected characters confronted by surreal, climactic moments. It is also a song off my favorite album of the year by Purity Ring.”
Their debut album, Shrines, solidifies the sounds that they intend to put forward, as each track on the album has the same underlying ideas. Their combination of futuristic elements and peaceful vocals has defined the band’s style of music.
If you’re interested in the music that Purity Ring has to offer, they begin the North American leg of their tour in early 2013. Below, are several of my favourite tracks by the duo.
