If you have a soft spot for mellow electronica, as I do, this week’s letter will hopefully satisfy your need for some chillwave music. This week’s Alphabet Soup will revolve around Oliver Tank. Oliver Tank, the mastermind. Oliver Tank, the great. Oliver Tank, who?
Oliver is a 22 year-old musician based out of Sydney, Australia who burst out into the music scene early in 2011 with his debut EP, Dreams. This electronic producer is not new to the game, but his style of music has changed Australia’s electronic scene. His almost ghostly vocals add such depth to his songs and the emotion that he portrays through his lyrics is almost palpable. If you have even a slight love for the chillwave genre, you will undoubtedly be interested in the music that Tank has to offer.
Oliver’s love for hip-hop is highlighted in his music and his combination of both real instruments and computers creates the perfect balance between hip-hop sounds and ambient electronics. He’s been compared to the likes of James Blake, which in my opinion is a compliment in itself.
Although not having released any songs in the past few months, his older songs are ones that definitely get my seal of approval and should be played on repeat for those days when you just need a break from all the hard beats that EDM has to offer. His song “Up All Night” is probably one of my favourites. He’s also experimented across borders, creating his rendition of Snoop Dogg’s “Drop it like it’s Hot”, called “Drop it like it’s Beautiful”.
I’ll leave you with the best of his best and from there you can decide whether to pump or dump Oliver Tank.
