After the storm better known as “midterms,” it’s always nice to chill out with some good vibes music and there’s no need to look much further. This week for Alphabet Soup, I’d like to introduce you to the likes of Nicolas Jaar. Born in New York and raised in Chile, Jaar took it upon himself to create an organic feel to electronic music, a type of music that he likes to call “blue-wave”. At 17, he began his venture into the music realm with “The Student EP”. Now, at 22, Jaar has his own record label Clown & Sunset, on which he released his latest album “Space is Only Noise”.
The great thing about Jaar is that he combines sounds from all sorts of outlets. On his last tour, he brought along his guitarist, drummer, saxophonist, and of course the laptop. This really does end up being the perfect combination of sounds, as his creativity is evident in all his songs.
His music is emotional without bringing in the typical, corny, love lyrics and his minimalist approach really leaves you in awe. Most of his songs linger around 100 BPM or lower, much lower than the average techno/house song. Apparently, that’s all part of his game. In an interview with Resident Advisor, Jaar says, “I’m going to keep taking the beats even slower… More unintentional things happen between the beats.”
That being said, pour yourself a glass of wine (or two), and let Jaar take you on a relaxing adventure through the complexity of sounds to find out exactly what these “unintentional things” are.
