Jonathan Adler, Lilly Pulitzer, Louis Vuitton…the new year is the perfect time to purchase a brand new agenda, whatever your preference. I prefer the tried and true day planners and to do lists that involve manually writing things down as opposed to the iPad apps or PDA organizers the technologically savvy may prefer. Agendas are an imperative part of staying organized so you can remember deadlines, mani/pedi appointments, and of course birthday dinners. Using an agenda and list making is not just for the OCD sufferers, crossing things off gives me a kind of unexplainable sense of accomplishment and planning my day has become an imperative part of my morning routine. So stay organized this new years and jump on the agenda bandwagon, I dare you.
Skincare products are probably one of the most worthwhile investments. Good skin is always in, so wash your makeup off before bed to let your pores breathe, clean your makeup brushes, moisturize, pamper yourself with the occasional mask, and most importantly find a routine that caters to your needs and works for you. With the weather growing increasingly cold, a good moisturizer is imperative to prevent dry or flaky skin. Hydrating the skin helps slow down the aging process, so stay young inside and out. People who suffer from oily skin or acne often make the mistake of neglecting to moisturize their face, fearing that it will initiate breakouts, however, if such is your case simply opt for an oil free moisturizer. If your skin is very dry, use a treatment or serum in addition to your moisturizer at nighttime.
If you’re trying to get into the habit of keeping your makeup collection clean and organized, brushes are the perfect place to start. People often invest in tons of high-quality makeup but fail to understand the importance of good brushes when it comes to flawless makeup application. Start of the new year by consenting to clean your brushes at least once a week (depending on how often you use them), and make sure you dispose of makeup periodically according to its shelf life (mascara should be disposed of every three months otherwise this can cause bacteria growth and eye infections). If you don’t own a good set of natural and synthetic haired makeup brushes or you simply want a uniform collection, now is the perfect time to gift yourself one.
With the start of the new semester quickly approaching, shopping for some new school supplies or desk essentials is sure to get you motivated to work hard, at least for a little while. Alexander Wang offers some perfectly simple, gold leafed black notebooks which can maybe even ease the manual note taking process. If you’re one of those people who can only study in Weldon, sprucing up your desk or office space might allow you to create an environment that’s more conducive to your studying and best of all, you don’t have to worry about finding a seat in the library come exam time.
Many successful people journal. You want to be successful. Ergo, you should journal. Keeping a journal prompts you to reflect on you life, your decisions and there is no better time to begin such an activity than at the start of the new year. Having a collection of your thoughts and feelings, your milestones, favourite quotes, or even a scribble of a simple but perfect day with your friends during your formative years will be invaluable down the line. Journals force you to be critical of yourself and prompt you to stop and think every night, even if just for a little while so life does not simply pass you buy in a blur. If you’re a writer I’m sure you could ramble on for pages and pages about even the most mundane days and have an overwhelming amount of emotions to purge. But if the idea of keeping a journal sounds desirable but you don’t think it’s feasible, this One Line A Day memory book only requires a couple sentences at the end of each day before bed over the course of five years. It becomes even more exciting once the years start to overlap and the gold leafed pages will look beautiful sitting on your nightstand. For the nights you can’t remember…there’s a journal!
Happy New Year!
