From Saturday, October 27th at 2 PM until Sunday, October 28th at 2 PM, please join the brothers of Phi Gamma Delta in Victoria Park for the third annual ABCampout in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).
Participants will enjoy 24 hours “camping out” in Victoria Park playing games, experiencing live talent, and learning about mental health from CMHA speakers. This year’s highlights include a flag football tournament, a BBQ, an outdoor art gallery, various carnival attractions (bouncy castle, inflatable joust or inflatable sumo wrestling anyone?), and live bands. The pièce de résistance? At 11 PM, the stage will be converted into a dance hall. Participants will receive headphones, allowing them to rage silently into the night with the stellar line-up of DJ’s. The headphone party will continue until sunrise. At 6 AM, a pancake breakfast will be served followed by a London Police escorted 3 KM awareness walk through the downtown core.
Phi Gamma Delta holds this event in honor of Austen Berlet; a brother who took his life on July 20, 2009 after battling bipolar disorder and severe depression for two years. Austen was an exceptionally bright individual and brilliant student who had a theoretical physics-related thesis published by the University of Texas at age 16, meanwhile pursuing his passion for skateboarding at a semi-professional level. Every year, the brothers of Phi Gamma Delta work closely with the CMHA and Austen Berlet’s family to bring ABCampout the exposure it has today.
“This event is truly beautiful. Hundreds, if not thousands of people appreciate it and everything it stands for.” –Lee Ann Berlet (Austen Berlet’s Mother)
Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity is one of the oldest and largest college fraternities in North America, and also boasts one of highest average GPA of any North American fraternity. Collectively, its 8,500+ members raised over $850,000 towards charities and contributed over 100,000 service hours in 2011, and aim to donate $1,000,000 and contribute 200,000 service hours in 2012.
“Austen Berlet touched the lives of so many people, both directly and indirectly. The passion surrounding this event is so powerful, and hopefully we will surpass all of our financial, educational and philanthropic goals!” –Joshua Sonshine, Event Organizer
