Everyone’s favorite bad guy (save for Kirk Anastasiadis) just announced that he is poised to premier a brand new reality show based on the same premise of his two highly successful shows, X Factor, America’s Got Talent and American Idol. In this brand new show, Simon Cowell is on the hunt for the world’s next biggest DJ.
We here at PremierLife have a huge appreciation for DJs. We love: the neighbourhood superstar who spins the best scratch ins and hip-hop sets at your favorite watering hole (yes, Many Things, I’m talking about you every Friday at Jim Bob Rays), having a favorite local producer who is on the verge of taking off (Giddy, here’s to you), finding those supremely talented Swedes and catapulting them into the world market (Avicii) and hell, we even like the videogame, DJ Hero, on occasion. So far, consensus among the PremierLife staffers has indicated that this show will be the downfall of Electro/House/Dubstep/EDM culture. In a market that is becoming so dilute with remixes and mistake riddled endeavours, we support the process of becoming a major DJ through practice, clocking time in behind the decks, making mistakes and then learning and improving from them. Becoming famous as a DJ shouldn’t be done through an audition process, it should be the progression from amateur to professional to superstar. Sure, the show will unearth some diamonds in the rough, but come on, is it worth ruining the mystique of the DJ?
